I ran a new course day at the shop last month, ‘Space Dyed Threads’. We hand-dyed a wide assortment of threads and fabrics using Procion dyes and got some fabulous results. However, amongst all the jars of dye, cat litter trays of shaded fabric, and plastic bags of wet threads I forgot to take any photo’s so you’ll just have to imagine what a colourful day we had ! It would be lovely to see what people have subsequently used their fabric and thread for if anyone has time to send me a pic.
Clare and Jill from East Yorkshire and their ‘Young Farmers’ exchange student from Switzerland, Bertina came for a day at my studio. They each wanted to do different projects which we managed to accommodate. Clare tried lino cutting and then printing onto fabric under the direction of Kev. Once this had dried she added to it with hand stitching and the use of the embellisher machine.
…. although looking at this picture Kev seems to be doing the embellishing whist Clare supervises and has a brew !
She had also brought some of her recent pieces of work to show us, here are just a few ! ….
Jill decided to learn how to make ‘Proddy Flowers’ to add to her already extensive knowledge of rag rugging techniques. She started a wreath shaped hanging and made a lot of progress in the day…..
Bertina had not had much textile experience previously, but wanted to make something she could take back to Switzerland as a souvenir of her visit to Yorkshire. She made a lovely applique owl cushion using pure Yorkshire wool.
My ‘Quilt as you Go’ course continues to be popular and we had another busy session at the shop learning this technique. One of the ladies who attended, Ali, writes her own blog ‘Thimberlina’, and has written a lovely account of her day at The Fabbadashery, if you get chance have a look. Here are a few pictures from the day ….
We had a lovely day with Janet and Justine a couple of weeks ago. Janet wanted to learn how to lino cut and print. Kev taught her how to turn the ‘paisley pear’ shape she chose into a print block and then print it onto a variety of fabrics and papers ……
Justine brought an abstract floral picture with her which she successfully interpreted in fabric ….
Maxine and Lily, two girls on a mission, (as usual!), came for a Mum and daughter day in the school holidays. Lily made a very impressive large make-up bag, quilted, lined and with a zip ….
Ella had also come over to help me with preparation for a couple of shows in the near future so was able to help Lily with her projects, although she doesn’t require a lot of help !
Max was working on a gorgeous purple quilt which I would have liked for myself to be honest !
The Halifax New Library Project is progressing very well and is almost completed. I won’t put any pictures of this on my blog as I don’t want to spoil the surprise once the library is completed and the project officially displayed. However, I will give you a sneak preview of some of the people involved , they are standing in a lovely rag rug meadow !
For the second time last week Maxine and Lily came for the day, accompanied by Jackie this time. Max’s quilt was completed ! Quite an achievement !
Jackie decided to work one of the Stumpwork Flowers we are going to be running a workshop on in the near future. She made good progress on the day and emailed this picture of the completed piece the day after !
…… There is a lot of work in this embroidery, but the finished piece makes it worthwhile !
Lily was making a colourful bird doorstop …
and also made herself a lovely pinny !
My friends from Hull, Mel and her crew, came for a day at the studio. Janet had decided to make a ‘Memory Bear’ incorporating fabrics from some of her Grandchildren’s clothing, and also her family tartan, McDougall. Here he is, very cute !….
The rest of the group worked on ‘Applique Pictures’ taking their inspiration from pictures or items they had brought with them. The results were very impressive, none of the pieces are completed yet, they have all gone back to Hull to have more embellishment added, but look at this pheasant !!
…. and this Yorkshire landscape ….
…. this VW camper van cushion …..
…. and this ethereal fantasy landscape ….
Janet came to help and managed to find time to make two applique bags for musical friends ! …..
Another group of ladies who make regular trips across from Scarborough came for a day out in sunny Halifax last week. We had a lovely day working on some more applique pictures ….
…. and Crewelwork …..
…. and a felt needlecase and pincushion ……
Back at the shop this weekend Ella and I were teaching ‘Wool on Wool Applique’ also known as ‘Penny Rugs’. I love this technique, the wool fabric is so lovely to work with and |I could sit and blanket stitch forever more without getting bored !
….. we all know you’re not really shy Julie ! ….
Nicola actually managed three pieces of work, how does she do that ?!! ….
So, finally, just to prove that I don’t spend ALL my time with a needle in my hand …..
since I last blogged I have been to Harlow Carr Gardens …..
… although we spent the afternoon painting instead, and I did stitch all the way there and back in the car – I wasn’t driving by the way !!
I have been to see two lots of outdoor Shakespeare performed by the fabulous Handlebards …..
….. a very special day out with my friend H……. A VIP tour of the Bronte Parsonage in Haworth and a behind the scenes close-up look at some of the precious items in the collection. Perfect day for two Brontephiles !!
… and an open air wedding reception / rock festival in a field at Sowood. I recognise that guitarist !!! …..
